This car is called a Springfield Rolls-Royce because it was produced in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1920 Rolls-Royce moved approximately fifty families from England to start up a factory in the United States. While the cars produced in the first few years were assembled from parts manufactured in England, later more and more parts were manufactured locally. By the time this car was built, virtually everything was made in the USA. Rolls-Royce continued to manufacture cars here until the plant closed about 1933, during the great depression.

This particular car is quite unusual for a couple of reasons. S-107 MK (S-101 MK being the first in this series), is currently the oldest of the series that is registered in the various Rolls-Royce clubs at present. This series began the left-hand drive production at the plant, using the 3-speed center shift gear box. This particular car was put out on trials (used as a demonstrator) in 1926. It was sent to Denver, CO; Minnesota; Chicago, IL; and Cincinnati, OH before being returned to the Inskip facility in New York for yet another rebuild in 1929. The body was cut down approximately 4 inches and the larger 21" balloon tires were also fitted to the car. The reworking of the car was done to make the car look more like the Phantom I series, which the USA factory had started producing in 1926. Rolls-Royce could not sell the older cars when the new models became available. Finally, the car was sold and delivered to Pittsburgh, PA, but not until September of 1930. Also unusual was the fact the car was sold through a lease-sale agreement for a ten month period, for about half the original 1925 price.
